The Victorian period (1837 – 1901) popularized black jewelry and is known as 'Mourning Jewelry' typically made from the gemstone Jet. Due to demand and increasing scarcity, black glass was an inexpensive alternative.

The term French Jet unclear, but likely was used in reference to the fashion houses in Pairs that imported the beads from eastern Europe, that then were made into jewelry.

Mid Century black glass jewelry still is referred to as French Jet; although the jewelry styling has a distinctly 'modern' vibe.
